The Institute for European Law is delighted to announce the closing academic event entitled “Constitutional challenges raised by the institutionalisation of non-compliance with EU law”, which will be held on Tuesday 23 June 2026, at the KU Leuven Brussels Campus and online. The event features Professor Ségolène Barbou des Places (Sorbonne Law School), and Professor Tim Corthaut (Belgian Council of State, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and Universität Wien).
The closing academic event will explore the constitutional challenges arising from a shift in the public discourse in the reception and implementation of EU law by Member States. Whilst weak compliance with EU law is not new phenomena, this event will launch a discussion on the constitutional implications of an institutionalization of non-compliance. Institutionalization refers to the process by which key public figures and institutional players formalize their stand, and develop strategies, to make space for limited compliance with specific provisions of EU law, or in specific sectors of EU law. The event will seek to map out the phenomenon, explore its novel features, and critically reflect on how EU institutions and bodies could respond to such challenges.
